6 Literacy Activities for Summer
A recent study by Donna Celano and Susan B. Neuman described how students utilize public libraries over the summer months and the results of what and how much they read were startling. Middle-income students read an average of 1,069 words per library visit vs. 618 for their lower-income counterparts, largely because the latter chose materials that provide less information and more visuals. Maintaining reading and writing practice over the summer is vital, so today we’re offering you 6 Literacy Activities students can use this summer. |

Studies have shown that mathematics skills can take a big hit during the summer months, with students losing up to 2.6 months of math computational skills.
Regular practice and reinforcement keeps procedural knowledge sharp, so today we’re offering you Number Names Math Activities for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to help them reinforce concepts and identify patterns and connections. This whole-group instruction weaves together different math strands including basic number sense, basic operations, patterns and algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, and vocabulary.
Build automaticity this summer for success next year!
When students achieve automaticity with math facts, they free up their working memory and can devote it to problem solving and learning new concepts and skills (Geary, 1994). The summer is a perfect time to build these skills, but how can you make it fun?
