Summer Learning Tips and Resources

Math Tips for Students and Parents!

During the summer months, math can be a challenging skill to keep sharp.  In fact, research shows students are more likely to forget what they have learned in mathematics over the summer than they are to lose literacy skills. (Cooper, Nye, et al. 1996)

Today we’re offering tips both to support students—and their parents—with math homework and practice throughout the school year and help keep skills fresh this summer.  View our math checklists, organized by grade level, to highlight math skills needed for Grades K–6, letting you pinpoint where a student needs help this summer.

Add a Little Drama to Summer School!

A recent comprehensive multi-year study by the RAND corporation provided numerous insights into effective summer learning programs. One of the highlights was the impact drama had as an enrichment activity, with one site leader from a program they studied describing it this way:

"We see a real benefit in drama. There are kids who came in who were reluctant to speak, and now they are reciting monologues. There is a spillover into the classroom as well. Those students are now responding more to open-ended questions and they are looking adults in the eye. They are building more confidence in their speaking skills."

Building confidence, improving classroom participation, and having fun while doing it!  This week we’re offering you two Readers’ Theater scripts, for Grades 2 and 5 in the hopes that you can use these resources to experience the same results in your classroom this summer.
