Fueling the Next Generation of Opportunity for Young Children’s Love of and Engagement in Reading

Host
Dr. Anne E. Cunningham
Professor, Cognition and Development
University of California, Berkeley

Date
Thursday, March 3, 2016

Time
3:30 PM ET/12:30 PM PT

Approximate Length
One Hour

Dr. Anne E. Cunningham, Professor, Cognition and Development, University of California, Berkeley, and lead author of Big Day for PreK™, sees opportunities for the next generation of readers everywhere she looks: at the grocery store, driving around town, hiking a coastal trail, waiting for the bus, and of course, on a cozy couch. She hopes preschool teachers and parents will take advantage of these reading opportunities in the everyday and turn them into engaging, teachable moments. Fostering language-rich environments can lead to confident, avid, and independent readers, even for a child who hasn’t had the opportunity early in life or isn’t self-motivated to read for pleasure. By wrapping fun language activities into the daily routine, carving out time for shared reading, and understanding how social and emotional development impacts reading, teachers and parents can help foster a love of reading.

In this webinar, Dr. Cunningham will share the rationale for and the cognitive consequences of fostering rich language experiences and reading every day with and to children.
